Dr. Nico Küter (Kueter) joins GL from ETH in Zurich. He will be working with Dr. George Cody on investigating molar volume isotope effects on hydrogen incorporated as water in silicate melts. Silicate melts, such as magma, yield unusually high hydrogen isotope fractionation when degassing volatiles, which may be explained by this molar volume isotope effect. This has implications on our understanding about the deep, geological water cycle, including the storage capacity and degassing processes of silicic magmatic melts.

His research interests include experimental isotope geochemistry, and experimental petrology.
