The End of an Era

Written by Zack Geballe and Michelle Scholtes

The Geophysical Laboratory and DTM went head-to-head on October 27, 2017 for the annual interdepartmental soccer match.  The GL pistons threatened early with Gus Borstad and Alex Poltorak connecting on several give-and-gos to advance the ball up the field. Andrew Steele and Abhisek Basu pressured the DTM defense but could not make it past DTM Mud Cup veterans, Adelio Contreras, TJ Rodigas and goalkeeper Conel Alexander.  The GL second string entered in a mass substitution partway through the first half, leading to a string of DTM opportunities, led by forwards Tolulope Olugboj and Otto Medina, along with midfielders Jesse Reimink and Anais Bardyn's boyfriend, Sammuel. But crafty GL goalkeeper Vic Lugo thwarted their attempts, including a leaping save off a beautiful shot by Olugboj. The bumpy field and aggressive play led to Roberto Molar twisting his ankle near the end of the first half, and being helped off the field by many DTM and GL players, including Steve Shirey and his Prius-turned-ambulance.

Relentless defense from both teams kept the ball bouncing around the midfield in the second half, but Otto Medina's beautiful arcing shot on a free kick from outside the 18-yard box  gave DTM a commanding 1-0 lead halfway through the second half. The GL offense tried to respond but failed to find a hole in the stalwart DTM defense despite wild kick-and-run plays by Steelie, Abhisek, Zhixue and Zack, along with more-skillful runs by Alex Poltorak.

With solemn hearts, GL reluctantly shook hands with the new winners, ending the two-year GL dynasty.  However, everyone became friends again once they reconvened back at BBR for pizza and beer.  Until next year!
