The Geophysical Laboratory seeks a highly-qualified applicant for a Postdoctoral Fellow position with expertise in geochemistry and data science. The successful candidate should have deep knowledge of geochemistry and petrology, particularly in the context of deep-time data-driven discovery (see, as well as proficiency in numerical modeling, high-performance computing, geospatial analysis, and machine learning. The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with members of the international 4D Initiative team (see, including Robert Hazen and Shaunna Morrison at Carnegie, as well as the emerging Deep-Time Digital Earth (DDE) project being developed in China (see Science, v.363, p.917).

Minimum qualifications: The applicant must have a PhD in Geoscience and must be proficient in methods of data-driven discovery. Familiarity with database development, management, and use; programming, including knowledge of python and R coding; experience with machine-learning applications to geoscience problems; and the interest and ability to work knowledgeably with data scientists and applied mathematics colleagues, are essential.

Desired qualification: Proficiency in written and spoken Chinese is desirable, though not mandatory.

This full-time, 2-year position will commence on or after May 1, 2019, and will be based at the Geophysical Laboratory at the Carnegie Institution’s Broad Branch Road campus in Washington, D.C.
